Amy Malek is a sociocultural anthropologist and assistant professor of International Studies at the College of Charleston (on leave for 2019-2020). Her primary research and teaching interests include migration, diaspora and transnationalism, memory, race, cultural policy and visual culture, with a particular emphasis on Iranian and Middle Eastern communities in North America and Europe. Dr. Malek earned her Ph.D in Sociocultural Anthropology at the University of California, Los Angeles, and an M.A. in Near Eastern Studies from New York University. Her book project is a transnational examination of the impacts of cultural policies on diasporic cultural production among and across Iranian communities in Sweden, Canada and the United States. She has consulted for a number of media outlets such as ABC Nightline, BBC World News, L.A. Times, AJ+ and Le Monde M.
